Lighthouse Parenting: Guiding Youth 9-19 to Develop Independence and Coping Skills to Navigate Their Own Journey

Virtual Event

Program Takeaways:

Independence isn’t the end goal—interdependence is. Kids need to learn they can stand alone so they can choose lifelong connection.

Lighthouse Parenting = loving guidance, not control. The sweet spot is being a steady, reliable presence with clear boundaries and real warmth.

Balanced parenting builds trust—and trust fuels “real monitoring.” The goal isn’t interrogating kids; it’s becoming the parent they’ll tell things to.

Co-regulation is the bridge to self-regulation. Your calm presence (especially in chaos) widens your child’s ability to think, problem-solve, and cope.

Preparation is protection. Instead of smoothing the road, help kids build a wide repertoire of healthy coping strategies and the confidence to recover from mistakes.

Participants will learn how to foster essential life skills such as independence and problem-solving, and discover a blueprint to create an unwavering and loving relationship with their child.

Lighthouse Parenting has become an effective and popular style of raising youth today. Created by Ginsburg, this framework balances love, rules, and responsiveness with the flexibility to meet the unique needs of each child. In his model, caregivers serve as a stable force in their children’s lives, offering guidance, attention, and unconditional love while also giving adolescents the freedom to experience life on their own. Developed after decades of research, this approach prepares youth to navigate the world successfully, and equips them with critical resilience and coping skills.

Ginsburg is a pediatrician specializing in adolescent medicine at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He is a professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and co-founder of the Center for Parent and Teen Communication. Ginsburg is an award-winning author of numerous best-selling books and lectures widely to national and international audiences.
